To Gwyds, couches are just hurdles in the racetrack of his life.

LOL. Is Gwyds a greyhound?

He would like to believe that he is, if his 90-mph bursts from the front door and down the block are any indication.

The folks on the farm we rescued him from claimed he was a catahoula/basset hound mix, but if there is basset in those legs, I'm a lizard.

As I understand it, a Basset hound is essentially a bloodhound with achondroplasia, the same form of dwarfism that Peter Dinklage and Warwick Davis have -- it dramatically limits the growth of the long bones in the limbs without changing the size of the head and torso much. It's caused by a single, autosomal dominant mutation, so the offspring of a basset hound crossed with another breed will either have legs just as short as the Basset's, or just as long as any other comparably sized dog -- there's no blending of the trait.

In humans, the trait is lethal in infancy when homozygous, which makes it extremely risky for two achondroplastic dwarfs to have children together. I'm not sure if the same is true in dogs, but if so one would expect to lose one in four pups from any litter with two Basset (or dachsund or bulldog, as those breeds are also achodroplastic) parents, and have another one in four turn out with normal-length legs.

I had to look up catahoula, but the picture on the Wikipedia entry (which is a beautiful dog, by the way) looks just like your drawing above, so I can well imagine that they might have been mistaken about his Basset parentage; even without the short legs, I would expect a Basset cross to have substantially longer ears and droopier jowls than its non-Basset parent, especially if the other was of a breed as trim-looking as the catahoula.

When I think Catahoula, I think Whippet, Whippet Good!
Lord, I 'pologize for that.
